This will increase the price of water rights further and faster. Here are some facts to think about: 1. It takes about 1,000 tons of water to grow one ton of wheat. 2. In the next 25 years, the number of people living in water-stressed areas will increase six-fold to 3 billion. 3. A tenth of the world's grain supply is propped up by unsustainable water use. 4. As water becomes scarce, competition for it is increasing - between neighboring states and countries, between farms and cities, and between people and their environment. 5. Many major rivers now run dry for most of the year.
